The Mollyverse, Monster Romance, and That Time I Accidentally Changed Reality

I started writing Molly and the Reaper years ago.

And then, like so many half-finished books, she went into the proverbial drawer. The “I’ll come back to this when I’m inspired or life calms down” drawer. (Spoiler: Life did not calm down.)

But last year, I finally did it. I dusted her off, cracked my knuckles, and pantsed my way through most of that book like I was being chased by a deadline demon. And somehow, it worked. Molly’s story found its ending.

Except it wasn’t the ending. Not really.

If you haven’t read Molly and the Reaper, here’s the TLDR (SPOILERS AHEAD): Molly has to choose between saving her sisters and the destruction of reality. She chooses her sisters. As a result, the veil between the human world and the magical realms becomes thin and overlaps. Suddenly, gods and monsters, spirits and shadows, all have access to our world. The rules changed.

At the time, I thought that was the end of the story.

It wasn’t.

Fast-forward to Hacked by the Beast. A completely different book. A totally different vibe. Set in Oria, my cozy-creepy town where werewolves pay taxes and spirits haunt the farmer’s market. I thought I was taking a break. Something fun. Something kinky and nerdy and weird in the best way. A reclusive nerdy monster and a robo bi-curious woman in Oria? Yes, please.

And then something happened.

I realized I wasn’t done with monsters. I really enjoy monster romance and had so much fun writing Hacked by the Beast that it jumped the queue and got done before Crone of Oria.

Two days ago, I was talking to Steve (my man person, certified chaos enabler), and I said it out loud:

The Mollyverse is a no-brainer setting for monster romance.

It’s a world where the barriers between realms aren’t just thin, they’re traversable. Where someone might walk into a subway station and find themselves in Asgard or Olympus. Where a gorgon could walk through a rift and end up standing in your driveway asking for a cup of sugar.

I don’t know why I didn’t see it before. I cracked the world open in Molly and the Reaper. Now it’s time to play in that world.

So yes. More monster romance is coming. Some hot. Some sweet. Some feral. All weird in ways that make me very, very happy.

The veil is thin now. And anything can come through.
